What is a Barcode Verifier?
A barcode verifier is a quality control instrument used to check the performance of a barcode against a defined set of industry standards. A barcode verifier will decode, measure, and grade the quality of the barcode symbol. Some barcode verifiers provide results based on industry specific application standards.
What Barcode Verifier is Right for your Business?
Choosing the right barcode verifier depends on a number of factors having to do with the type of barcodes you need to test, whether or not basic barcodes or specific industrial applications need to be tested, and the testing environment.

There are many important questions to consider before purchasing a your verifier.
Where are the barcodes located that you need to verify?
Are your barcodes on a flat surface, curved surface, on a moving production line?
What is the symbology of the barcode you need to verify?
How small or large are the barcodes you need to scan?

Barcode Verifiers basically come in four different forms:
Portable barcode verifiers allow users to take the device to the barcode. Through multiple scans of the barcode, the verifier displays the results on the device’s LCD screen. The verifier may be set up to print a brief report of the analysis on a mobile printer, as written proof of the symbol’s quality.
PC tethered barcode verifiers typically attach to a desktop or laptop PC. While that doesn’t make them as mobile as a portable verifier, there are some advantages: the ability to save the verification report and / or send the data to a database, the ability to print the report on the local or network printer, and the ability to email the report to others. Fotel sells only ISO/IEC compliant barcode verifiers.
Fixed Mount barcode verifiers provide 100% verification in a conveyerized system on an automated, unattended basis. Some verifiers connect RS232, some via Ethernet, some are wireless. Linear and 2D symbols can be verified. Most fixed mount verifiers optionally trigger light stacks and / or audible alarms to signal user-defined performance parameters. Many barcode verification systems can also provide code match and serialization checks.
Stand Alone barcode test stations are completely self-contained. All controls and display functions are on board. Printed reports cam be obtained with optional printers or with optional cable connection to user-provided PC.
Not all Barcode verifiers can read all barcode symbologies.
Barcode verifiers are available with many different types of readers such as Laser, CCD, or Imagers. The reader type, and software included, will determine what type of barcode symbologies can be read. Laser equipped barcode verifiers typically can read only 1D linear codes such as , GTIN-12, UPC, EAN, GTIN-14, ITF-14, Code 39, GS1-128, Code 128, GS1-Databar, and some 1D stacked symbologies. CCD equipped barcode verifiers can typically read 1D and 1D stacked linear such as PDF417. Barcode verifiers equipped with imagers typically can read 1D, 1D stacked, 2D barcodes such as, Datamatrix, MaxiCode, PDF417, Micro PDF417, QR Code, Databar, and some imagers may be able to capture signatures.
Did you know that gun-type verifiers do not perform full ANSI verification?
If you are verifying barcodes printed in anything other than black bars against a white background using a gun-type verifier, you are at risk. Two important parameters, color contrast and reflectivity, require testing the barcode at a fixed distance and angle. Gun-Type verifiers are hand-held at various distances and angles. Most gun-type verifiers simply ignore color and reflectivity parameters.

Some barcode verifiers test barcodes to ISO specifications only. Others can also test barcodes to industry specific applications such as Health Care, Automotive, and Retail. These are important considerations in choosing the right barcode verifier. The lowest price on an inadequate verifier is a waste of money - So is buying too much verification capability. Buy Smart. Buy from Fotel. Get the right verifier at a great price.

Why do you need to verify printed barcodes?
Barcode Verification is risk management and it takes knowledge and expertise to do it right. Most sales organizations just want to sell you something-that’s their business plan. You could end up spending too much, or too little, and not be managing the risk of a poorly performing barcode. That risk includes substantial fines from retailers, lost shelf space, terminated customer relationships and a damaged reputation. Verification is akin to insurance: you hope you’ll never need it but you can’t really function without it. "But we’ve never had a problem" is no excuse.
A Barcode Scanner is not the same as a Barcode Verifier. Don’t be fooled into thinking you can substitute a scanner for a verifier. They are not the same. Scanners of various makes and ages perform differently. One scanner may read a barcode while another won’t. Only an ANSI verifier can tell you how a barcode will perform, and how its performance may be deteriorating over the duration of a print run. Is it a good, solid ANSI "C" grade or is it a low "C" drifting toward a "D"? Only a verifier will tell you. Only a verifier will give you the eyes to see and the time to make a critical adjustment that can save the print run--and the customer.
